Little J's First Storyboard and Screenplay

Little J has entered new creative frontiers. Today, completely of his own accord, he wrote a storyboard and screenplay, had me film it, and then acted it out with his Lego Star Wars guys and had me film that, also. One of these days I may figure out how to post the actual video footage, but since I'm not even at home, that's not going to happen now. So I give you the screenplay. You will just have to imagine the pictures (and then the acting) that went along with it.

The Death Star Attack

Conceived, written, drawn, filmed and copyrighted by Little J age 4 years and 9 months

Scene 1:

Storm trooper 1: Boss, Jedis are coming.

Darth Vader (with huge light saber blocking multiple bullets): Don't worry. I'm practicing with the guns and keep blocking the bullets they are shooting at my light saber.

Scene 2:

Storm trooper 2 (in flaming speeder): Oh boy! I think my ship's on fire...which it is!

Scene 3:

Storm trooper 1: Do you think this is a bad idea?

Darth Vader (still blocking bullets with his light saber): It's a good idea because I was practicing.

Scene 4:
Storm trooper 2's speeder is blowing up into multiple flaming pieces.

THE END

Now tell me that's not going to be a blockbuster!!!!

Birthdays

I just had a birthday.

Today is my husband's birthday.

In 3 days, it would have been my sister Nicole's 29th birthday.

For some reason, this year I feel old. I didn't have a problem turning 30. And not much of a problem turning 31, 32, or 33. I have had more of a problem when my younger siblings had a birthday, especially Tori, who is right under me. When she turned 30, I felt old. The fact that Nicole would have been 29 makes me feel really old.

Now I know in my head that 34 is not old. But I think because I feel tired and fat is why I feel old. I look in the mirror and I look run down to me. That and the fact that I can vividly remember my mom being as young as 27 makes me feel old. She was my age now when I was in 9th grade!!!!! HELLO!

Last night I watched the movie Hairspray with my sisters and I was wondering why they would do a remake of a movie so soon. Then I realized that the original Hairspray came out 20 years ago! 20 years! That's almost a generation ago! Then today everyone was getting a good laugh at my envy-of-the-eighties hairdos, and I realized that those pictures were also 20 years old, even though it feels like yesterday.

Just go on and pass me the Geritol and Depends...

Christmas Funnies

We are in Texas right now visiting my family, and of course, there have already been some funny conversation exchanges between my kids and others. This morning, my dad came in to the room where Big J and Little J were playing and said something about how it was Christmas Eve and Santa was coming tonight. And I jokingly said, "Yeah, to bring you a lump of coal!" to which my dad added, "Or a bag of switches."

Now I don't know about the rest of you, but here in the South, that was/is as common of a saying as Santa bringing you a lump of coal. My parents never personally used any switches on us, but I was at a friend's house once when she got in trouble and her mom told her to go pick a switch... This was the 70s, you know. But I digress....

The boys looked a little confused and so I said, "Do you know what a switch is?" Little J said he didn't, but Big J answered, "Yes! Those things you turn on the light with!" :-)

And then a little bit later at breakfast, Little J was his usual charming self when he told my mom that "her face looks funny in the morning." That got a good chuckle out of all of us.

Wishing you all a Happy Christmas Eve and Merry Christmas!!!

You should try this sometime...

I went to give the boys a bath and there was a picture of a bumblebee-type creature that Little J had drawn, lying on the tub floor. I didn't really think much about it, since I am always finding things in there, but I asked him why it was in the bathtub.

He explained to me that this morning he had seen a spider in the bathtub and he wanted to catch it. So he drew a picture of "the things spiders like to eat" so that he could trick it. He said he was going to wait for the spider to wrap the fake bug up in a web and then catch the spider when it was least expecting it.

He was disappointed his plan didn't work, and got tired of waiting for the spider to catch its prey. So he told me he finally just "squished the poop out of it" instead.

Dog Train

That is the title of the CD/book by Sandra Boynton that my kids and I have been rockin' out to since my friend Sarah gave them their Christmas present. If you want some kids' music that doesn't drive you crazy, then this is it.

The majority favorite, by far, is the song Tantrum sung by the Spin Doctors. It starts off slow and mellow like a ballad until it gets to the part where it says, "All I want to do now is throw a tantrum..." and then it goes into a head-banging, "NO! NO! NO! I DON'T WANNA! I DON'T WANNA!" It's awesome.

I also really like Dog Train, Pots and Pans, and (Don't Give Me That) Broccoli. There are lots of fun songs to dance to and that are just plain fun. So if your kids like to dance around, and you are needing some last minute Christmas ideas, then I highly recommend this.

Cancelled Anatomy Lesson

So I was talking to my sister on the phone about how our name exchange was uneven because she has so many kids, and it was decided I would take Liv in addition to the other names I had. I asked her if Liv would like a doll, because I remembered that sometime during the year I had picked up a doll (that was normally priced $35 and was on clearance for $4) thinking that I had enough nieces that at some point it would come in handy to give as a gift.

I hadn't looked at the doll stashed up in the closet pretty much since I got it so many moons ago, and went to get it down to see if it would work as a gift for an almost two-year-old. The first clue I should have had was that the baby was very life-like in features and size. It was naked except for a diaper. The fact that it it looked so real and had a plastic bag over its face inside the box was a little freaky, too.

There was no description on the box. It only said "Diana Collection". The baby had a little fake hospital bracelet on its wrist and from what I could see it said "Diana". Imagine my surprise when I took it out of the box and found this:

Apparently, this doll is not a Diana; it is an uncircumcised male!! We decided it must be one of those parenting class type-dolls. I guess I will need to make a run to the store to get Liv a new present.

The (Frozen) Great Plains

As some of you may have heard, a major ice storm hit the central part of the country this weekend. Thankfully, the area we are in did not get the worst of it. Church was cancelled and so was school, trees were drooping from the weight of the ice, but we didn't lose electricity or anything like that. We did lose a few branches from one of our trees, but nothing major. Not like the time I looked out and couldn't see our swing set because half of a tree had fallen over it.

Today is the first day it is above freezing, so all the ice has started to melt. Driving around I've seen HUGE chunks of ice falling off of power lines and trees, and then shatter all over the ground like glass. Kind of crazy.

Here are a couple of pics from the frozen tundra.

Remember my favorite tree?....

A Stolen Christmas Meme

I stole this meme from my sister.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? I use both. I like bags, because they are quicker and easier. I'm not into making a whole presentation.

2. Real tree or artificial? We have a fake, 1500 white bulb pre-lit one. It rocks.

3. When do you put up the tree? I try to by the weekend after Thanksgiving.

4. When do you take the tree down? It depends if I'm in town for Christmas or not. Usually by New Year's Day.

5. Do you like eggnog? I like a sip of it, but I can't drink an entire cup.

6. Favorite gift received as a child? Probably the giant Barbie condo complete with furniture.

7. Do you have a nativity scene? Yes. I kind of collect them. I have 4 full sets and 3 mini ones (just with Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus). I would have more, but I don't have anywhere to display them all.

8. Hardest person to buy for? My husband, hands down.

9. Easiest person to buy for? Teacher gifts and other non-personal type people.

10. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? In order to protect the innocent, I can't say. Let's just say I thought it was a table runner, when in reality it was a shawl/wrap. I will say, however, that I received worse wedding gifts than Christmas gifts.

11. Mail or email Christmas cards? Always mail. (That is assuming I actually mail any).

12. Favorite Christmas Movie? A Christmas Carol and It's a Wonderful Life. I also really enjoy A Muppet's Christmas Carol.

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? Sometimes at the after Christmas sales the year before. Usually, however, in November.

14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? I don't think so. But I will confess I have recycled some of the goodies people bring by. Is that so lame??

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Southern Candied Yams and Cherry Surprise

16. Clear lights or colored on the tree? I like white on the main tree, but on the little tree I let the kids decorate, we have colored blinking ones.

17. Favorite Christmas song? O Holy Night

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? We usually travel.

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeers? Yes. Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixon, Blitzen, Comet, Cupid, Donder and the most famous reindeer of all - Rudolph.

20. Angel on the tree top or a star? We have a big red bow. My tree is red, white and gold.

21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? We open them on Christmas Eve and then enjoy Santa presents in the morning.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of year? Too much commercialism.

23. What I love most about Christmas? It's the most wonderful time of the year.... I like the excitement and being sneaky. I like the coziness and being with family.

WISHING YOU ALL A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A ROCKIN' NEW YEAR !!

Conversation Over Breakfast

The following conversation took place between 7:45 and 7:47 a.m.:

Little J to Big J: "Try to pick up the house."

Big J (grunting and actually trying): "A house is too heavy."

Little J: "But when you're a grown up and Superman you can pick up a house."

Big J: "Yeah. But it still might take me a second."

(Slight pause).

Little J: "Why is your shirt like that? You look like a girl." (Big J's pajama top had fallen down some on his shoulder).

Big J: "I don't know. It just fell down like girls' shirts do."

Little J: "No. They make it look that way on purpose." (Such wisdom!)

Little J runs into the bathroom and rinses his hands and on the way out says:

Little J: "Mama, why does each kid have a fatter head?"

Me (with confused expression): "What?"

Little J: "Hey, Big J, remember that guy on Star Wars that has the really skinny head?"

Big J: "Oh yeah! And that one guy that...."

At this point they were slowly losing me so I tuned out. Contrary to what may be indicated, these children were completely of a sound mind when this conversation took place.

A Manly Conversation

Today when we picked up Big J from school, Little J greeted his brother and his friend with the following:

"Hey guys, today I went poop and it looked like a pine cone!"

Of course that tipped off a lovely conversation for the ride home.

ABC and 123

I have really bright kids. Of course I am biased, but on an unbiased scale, they are still very smart. I think that sometimes Big J gets more attention on the intellectual front because he is the oldest and venturing into new areas first, and also because he thrives on learning. He's always loved it. He was the one who even before he was one year old would bring me books to read to him, and actually sit through it all. He had entire books memorized word for word before he was even 2. He was the one who by 18 months could do like 25 piece puzzles with interlocking pieces. He loved it. He'd practice it. If I ever said, "Want to do school?" which was what we call it when I sit down with them and do little learning activities, he was all over that. He still is. During the summers, he asks me to do school with him.

Little J has a completely different learning personality, but is also so, so smart. That kid has a memory like you wouldn't believe! It's almost freaky sometimes. He remembers things like 3 years later that were just mentioned in passing. He wouldn't sit down to listen to a book or do anything else "structured" for the longest time, but now he loves for me to read to him and do school with him - for a limited time. He doesn't flaunt his braininess like Big J does, though. Instead, he'll just bust out with things that I had no idea he even knew. He is 4 1/2 and he can already recognize and write on his own almost the entire alphabet both upper and lowercase letters. I didn't know he could do that, he just did it. He's been able to write his name since he was 3, but at a time when most of his preschool classmates are barely writing their name, he started writing his first and last name. I don't ever remember teaching him to write his last name! I think he just taught himself after seeing it spelled out on things. The other day, he came to me with every member of our family's names written out and spelled correctly. At first, I thought maybe he had copied them off of something. But he did it entirely out of his head. He's started to spell other words, too. But even with all these things, he does not have the same type of thirst for knowledge that Big J does. He wants to know when he wants to know, but not a second sooner.

Big J has loved school from the get-go. Even in preschool, he was sooo into it. Little J - not so much. Last year, he screamed for 2 months straight whenever we would take him. I almost took him out of it because he had such a hard time with it. But then he started to enjoy going and has been fine ever since. He likes it, but he still will say things like it's "boring" or he doesn't want go because he'd rather stay and play. I'm a little nervous about when he has to start going every day.

My learning personality is more like Big J's. I see a lot of my sister's learning personality in Little J. I am hoping I will be able to play to both of their strengths and styles so that they will have positive experiences through school and be able to learn as much as possible. So any of you with good tips on how to adjust to your children's learning styles - I'm all ears!

Blogstipation and New Talents

So I haven't posted for a while. I haven't had a lot of time to sit down to think of something remotely interesting to anyone besides myself. And this post may not meet that requirement, either, but here goes:

Big J has turned into the seven-year-old boy who learned to armpit fart and thinks it's really funny. All. The. Time. He also has branched out into the music and lyrics business by creating even new lines to the age-old "Jingle Bells, Batman smells..." The last one had something to do with Santa's underwear.

Little J is a budding rock star. This morning he was singing, "There's mud on your face! You big disgrace! Kickin' your can all over the place! WE WILL, WE WILL, ROCK YOU!!!" Followed by, "Welcome to the jungle! We've got fun and games!"

Little Man's new favorite activity is to crawl on top of the kitchen table, so now we have to make sure there aren't any drinks or anything lying around on it. He gets up there no less than 20 times a day. He got over, for the most part, trying to take all the ornaments off the tree, so I guess he needed to move on to new and exciting things. That, and he's started to purposefully bang his head on whatever is closest to him, including our face, if he gets upset. It's like he'll look at us all mad and bang his head down once to teach us a lesson.

I'm reading a really interesting book called Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. She is a woman who was raised Muslim and lived in several African countries and Saudi Arabia growing up, and when she was forced into an arranged marriage she escaped to the Netherlands. Now she is a member of the Dutch government and fights for the rights of Muslim women in Europe.

That's about it, besides the usual craziness that goes on. So until next time...
